Boat Winterization in Western Washington

Custom Marine Services provides basic and full boat winterization from our Stanwood, WA location for boat owners throughout Western Washington and the Puget Sound region. Prepare your engine, fuel system, batteries, and key components for seasonal storage before winter weather arrives.

Professional Boat Winterization

Proper winterization prepares important engine and fuel-system components for the time your boat will spend out of use.

Fuel may sit in the tank for months. Water can remain inside engine and cooling-system components. Engine surfaces can be exposed to moisture and corrosion while the boat is stored.

Winterizing the boat before seasonal storage helps address these areas before colder weather arrives.

Custom Marine Services offers two levels of winterization service: Basic Winterization and Full Winterization.

Basic Boat Winterization

Basic Winterization covers the core steps needed to prepare your boat’s engine and fuel system for seasonal storage. The service focuses on fuel stabilization, internal engine protection, draining water from key components, corrosion protection, and battery disconnection.

For boat owners in Western Washington, it’s a practical way to prepare the engine before extended winter storage.

Full Boat Winterization

Full Winterization includes the complete Basic Winterization process along with additional engine and lower-unit maintenance. It is designed for boat owners who want to take care of routine service items while preparing the boat for the off-season.

In addition to winterizing the engine and fuel system, Full Winterization includes an engine oil and filter change and lower-unit gear lube service.

Winterization for Western Washington Boat Owners

Western Washington boats may spend months out of use during the off-season. Before seasonal storage, winterization prepares key engine and fuel-system components for that downtime and helps address water, fuel, corrosion, and battery considerations before colder weather arrives.

Custom Marine Services provides boat winterization from our shop in Stanwood, WA, serving boat owners throughout Western Washington and the greater Puget Sound region.

Whether your boat is being put away for the season or simply won’t be used for an extended period, scheduling winterization before storage gives you time to get the work completed before winter weather becomes a concern.

Questions About Boat Winterization?

Get quick answers about basic and full winterization, engine protection, antifreeze, oil changes, lower-unit service, and preparing your boat for seasonal storage.

That keeps the section tightly focused on the actual FAQs below it and supports the page’s winterization topic without sounding repetitive.

What Does Boat Winterization Include?2026-09-01T18:16:13-07:00

Boat winterization prepares key engine and fuel-system components for seasonal storage.

At Custom Marine Services, Basic Winterization includes adding fuel stabilizer, running the engine on a fogging and winterizing mixture, draining the engine block, manifolds, risers, and water pump, backfilling the engine with non-toxic RV antifreeze when applicable, applying corrosion spray, and disconnecting the batteries.

Our Full Winterization includes those same steps plus an engine oil and filter change and a lower-unit gear lube drain and refill.

What Is the Difference Between Basic and Full Winterization?2026-09-01T18:17:52-07:00

Both Basic and Full Winterization prepare the engine and fuel system for seasonal storage.

Basic Winterization includes fuel stabilization, engine fogging and winterizing, draining the engine block, manifolds, risers, and water pump, non-toxic RV antifreeze when applicable, corrosion protection, and battery disconnection.

Full Winterization includes everything in the Basic service plus:

  • Engine oil and filter change
  • Lower-unit gear lube drain and refill

If you’re unsure which option makes sense for your boat, call Custom Marine Services and we can talk through the two services with you.

Do You Use Antifreeze When Winterizing a Boat Engine?2026-09-01T18:19:32-07:00

Yes, when applicable.

As part of both our Basic and Full Winterization services, the engine is drained and may be backfilled with non-toxic RV antifreeze when applicable.

The winterization process also includes draining the engine block, manifolds, risers, and water pump.

Because engine and cooling-system configurations vary, the exact winterization process depends on the boat and engine being serviced.

Does Boat Winterization Include an Oil Change?2026-09-01T18:21:08-07:00

An engine oil and filter change is included with our Full Winterization service.

It is not included with Basic Winterization.

Full Winterization combines the core winterization process with an engine oil and filter change and lower-unit gear lube service, making it an option for boat owners who want to complete additional routine engine maintenance before seasonal storage.

Is Lower-Unit Gear Lube Changed During Winterization?2026-09-01T18:23:04-07:00

Draining and refilling the lower-unit gear lube is included with our Full Winterization service.

It is one of the main differences between Basic and Full Winterization. Full Winterization also includes an engine oil and filter change in addition to the core winterization process.

Basic Winterization does not include lower-unit gear lube service.

Are Boat Batteries Disconnected During Winterization?2026-09-01T18:24:25-07:00

Yes. Battery disconnection is included with both our Basic and Full Winterization services.

Disconnecting the batteries is one part of preparing the boat for its seasonal storage period. Our winterization services also address the fuel system, engine, water-containing components, and corrosion protection.

When Should I Schedule Boat Winterization Service?2026-09-01T18:26:16-07:00

Boat winterization should be scheduled before your boat enters extended seasonal storage and before freezing weather becomes a concern.

Planning ahead gives you time to complete the winterization process and address other maintenance needs before the boat is put away.

Custom Marine Services provides Basic and Full Winterization from our location in Stanwood, WA for boat owners throughout Western Washington and the Puget Sound region.
